17th Battalion, South Carolina Cavalry (6th)
The 17th Cavalry Battalion [also called 6th Battalion] was assembled during the spring of 1862. It contained four companies and was attached to the Department of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida. After serving along the coast near Charleston, the unit merged into the 5th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment. Major Robert J. Jeffords was in command.

Following unverified:
Entered service in 1861, in Jefford's Squadron Cavalry. Rank; Asst.Engineer.
Engineer Dept. C.S.Navy. Remarks; Detailed by Secy. of Navy as Asst.Engineer
to assist in equipping gun and torpedo boats. Captured at evacuation of
Charleston, while destroying gun and torpedo boats at the date of surrender,
April 1865, in Charleston, South Carolina.
