About Molias Hardy:

Found in 1860 Census, Arkansas, Columbia Co., Magnolia Township, Page/Image 117:

Molias Hardy 22 Laborer Tenn.
Julia Hardy 19 Miss.
............................................................................

I have a copy of two letters written by Molias to his wife while he served in the Confederate Army. The first was written from his Confederate camp in Camden, AR, probably in late 1861. In it he talks of missing "little Matty", who I believe was his daughter. The second letter was written from near Monticello, AR while Molias and his unit was on the march from Camden to Tennessee, where they took part in the battles at Fort Henry and Fort Donelson. These letters are posted on my web site.
............................................................................

Molias Hardy served in Company A, 15th Arkansas Regiment of the Confederate Army during the Civil War. He was involved in the battle at Ft. Donelson, TN in Feb., 1862, was captured and sent to a Union prison camp at Camp Butler, Illinois, where he died on March 15, 1862. It is not known whether he died of wounds or of disease, but it was likely disease, since thousands of prisoners died there due to the harsh conditions and lack of medical care.

I have a copy of his service record, which is filed under "N. Hardy" in the archives. Some of the individual cards in the record are labelled "N. Hardy", and some are labelled "M. Hardy", all showing the same company and regiment. The person transcribing the original records obviously couldn't tell if the initial was N or M. However, the last card convinces me that this is Molias. This card is a record of a claim for deceased soldiers, and the name reads "Molins Hardy". The name of the person making the claim is "Julia Hardy, widow".

A summary of the information on the cards is given below:

Company A, 15th Arkansas Regiment
HARDY, N./M.
Pvt. Enlisted on Oct. 4, 1861 at Magnolia, Ark. for one year. Captured 16 Feb 1862 at Ft. Donelson, TN and sent to POW camp at Camp Butler, Springfield, IL. Died 15 Mar 1862. Buried in Grave 700, Confederate Section, National Cemetery, Springfield, IL. Claim for benefits filed 11 Dec 1862 by Julia Hardy, widow.

The younger brother of Molias, John R. Hardy also served in this company, and was also sent to Camp Butler, surviving to fight in more battles.

About Julia Crain:

Julia remarried and moved from Arkansas to Texas sometime between 1863 and 1867. She and her second husband William Beaty and their children were found in Polk Co. near Livingston in the 1870 Census. Julia and her children were found there in 1880 Census also, living with Joseph Beaty (her husband William died in 1877). Between 1880 and Sept. 1883, she moved to Titus Co. near Monticello, where she lived until her death.

Found in 1870 Census, Texas, Polk Co., Livingston P.O., p. 460, im.85.

Battie, William J. 37 farmer SC
Battie, Julia 27 MS
Battie, Mary E. 3 TX
Battie, Nancy E. 6/12 TX

The last name (Beaty) was misspelled by the enumerator. Julia's daughter Mattie by her first husband Molias Hardy is not with her, location unknown, possibly died.
.....................................................................................

Found in 1880 Census, Texas, Polk Co., Dist. 71, p. 66, img. 10. Julia and her four children were living with Joseph Beaty, age 75, who is probably the father of Julia's husband William, who died in 1877.

Beaty, Joseph head 75 farmer SC NC VA (father of William Joseph Beaty?)
Beaty, Martha Ann dau. 41 AL SC SC
Beaty, John J. son 23 MS SC SC
Beaty, Julia 38 MS SC SC (Julia Crain Hardy Beaty)
Beaty, Mary E. 13 TX SC MS (dau. of Julia)
Beaty, Nancy E. 10 TX SC MS (son of Julia)
Beaty, William J. 7 TX SC MS (son of Julia)
Beaty, Charles 4 TX SC MS (son of Julia)

......................................................................................

Found in 1900 Census, Texas, Titus Co., Dist. 122, sh. 3. Julia Baity and sons Charles and William living with daughter Nancy E. Stuart and her family. It shows that Julia has had 6 children, 3 living. It gives her birth date as Dec., 1842.

About Martha Frances Hardy:

I believe her full name was Martha Frances Hardy. That name was on a letter written by her father to her mother during the Civil War (see letter here: http://www.thehardyparty.com/hardy/letter1_molias_hardy.htm). In this letter and one other I have, he referred to his daughter as "Matty". Those are the only records of her that I've found. The census records of 1870 and 1880 which show her mother do not show her present. She may have died prior to 1870.
