William H. Orchard taught music to the young ladies of South Carolina. He is listed as being on the faculty of Limestone Springs (SC) Female High School at it's founding in October, 1845, his position being "Instructor in Music-Piano, Guitar, Organ, and Harp". By the time of the 1850 Census, he and his family were living in Columbia, SC, where his occupation was shown as " Professor of Music-Female Institute". He was a co-founder in 1854 of Columbia Female College, a private college for women which is still in operation today as Columbia College.
...........................................................................

DAR applications filed by his grandaughters Pauline Munford (in 1924) and Helen Hamilton (in 1931) state that Helen Zubley Williams was the second wife of William Henry Orchard. I have no information on the first wife.

Orchard, Thomas C. 14; South Carolina
Orchard, Sophia H. 12; South Carolina
Orchard, Eugenia 10; South Carolina
Orchard, Eddie J. 7; South Carolina
Orchard, James J. 4; South Carolina

Henry M. and Thomas C. Orchard did not appear on 1850 Census. I believe that "Elliot F." in the 1850 census is the same person as "Thomas C." in the 1860 census. The ages track correctly. I think "Thomas Elliot" is the correct name, with mistakes being made in the initials in both census. Also, Elizabeth is not shown on this census.

Record of Deaths in Columbia South Carolina

Miss Frances C. Lewis, died at the residence of Mr. Wm. Orchard, in Col'a. So. Mar. 12, 1862. Consumption.

In the will of Elihu Williams, father of W.H. Orchard's wife Helen, a granddaughter Frances Cornelia Virginia Lewis is mentioned, and I assume this is the person referred to in the death record. She would have been a niece of Helen Orchard.

All born in SC except William Henry. The names don't all track from the 1860 Census. Linny may be Elizabeth (or Lizzie, as she was apparently nicknamed), Jeromie may be James J. Don't know who the McNeil children are. Helen remained the same age.

.................................................................................

DAR applications filed by two grandaughters give Wm. Henry's death date as 1880. A record for his wife Helen from 1889 shows her as a widow.

About Helen Zubley Williams:

One source gives her middle name as "Zubby", another as "Zubley".
...........................................................................

Found listings for Helen Orchard in the 1889 and 1890 Atlanta, GA Directories:

Listed as widow of W. H. Orchard; Location: 91 Capitol Avenue, Atlanta. Same data for 1889 and 1890.

Found in 1900 Census, GA, Fulton Co., Atlanta, Peachtree St., ED 80, sh. 11B. Birth: Dec. 1830 (must have meant 1820); age 69 (she must have really been 79); widow. Living with son, William E. Orchard, 43, dau. Eugenia Stovall, 34, a widow, and a granddaughter Helen Gleason, 15.

Eugenia's age could not have been correct, since she was in the 1850 Census, age 2.

About Henry M. Orchard:

During the Civil War, Henry M. Orchard served in Company A, 15th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. This regiment has an illustrious record and was engaged in most of the major battles of the eastern war, but it is unknown what role Henry Orchard played. His Confederate service record has few details. It states that he enlisted as a private on September 5, 1861 at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia, SC. Company A was known as the Columbia Rifles, and was commanded by Thomas W. Radcliffe. He is listed as present with this unit as a private through August, 1864, when the record ends. On August 8, 1864, he was sick in Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA, and on August 12th was furloughed for 30 days to Columbia, SC. He was apparently sent home to recuperate from his illness. It is assumed that he returned to his unit, but it is unknown how he spent the remainder of the war.

The 15th S. C. Infantry Regiment was formed near Columbia, SC in Sept., 1861 with soldiers from Richland, Union, Lexington, Kershaw, Fairfield, and Williamsburg counties. The regiment participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Second Manassas to Gettysburg, then fought with Longstreet at Chickamauga and Knoxville. It returned to Virginia, saw action at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, and later was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the North Carolina Campaign.
...............................................................................................

A Henry Orchard, age 27, was found in the 1870 Census, SC, Lexington Co., p. 79, img. 100, living with three other men (Fred, Thomas, and Jonathan Kaigler), no women, occupations listed as farmers. Lexington Co. is adjacent to Richland Co., his former home. This is probably the same Henry Orchard, and indicates that he did survive the Civil War. Jonathan Kaigler served in the same Confederate company as Henry Orchard.

No records found for Henry Orchard after the 1870 Census.

About Thomas Elliot Orchard:

There is a T. E. Orchard listed in Civil War records:

T. E. Orchard Co. A, 5 Battalion South Carolina Reserves. (Brown's Batt'n.); private

Unproven if this record is for Thomas Elliot Orchard, but it most likely is, since there is also a W.E. Orchard in the same company, probably his brother William.

About Isaac Edward (Eddie) Orchard:

Isaac Edward Orchard was a notable chess player, and competed in tournaments in the South Carolina region. There are several mentions of him as a player and as a writer on the subject in several chess-related publications, such as this article from "Spartanchess", a publication of the Spartanburg (SC) Chess Club:

"Club History

Organized chess in Spartanburg goes back to at least 1881 when both a major and a minor tournament were held at the Merchants' Inn. Records of these events are sketchy, but evidently the proceedings opened with the mayor participating in a consultation game and the major tournament continuing for a week. Chess historian, Robert John McCrary, found an announcement of this tournament in the "Philadelphia Times" and very possibly a game from this event won by Isaac E. Orchard, a Columbia native."
