Ferguson Family History

Recent DNA tests indicate that my Ferguson line probably has Scottish ancestors.  After migrating to America, my Ferguson ancestors settled in Virginia, migrated to Missouri, and then to Texas, and finally to Louisiana.  My third great-grandfather, John Ferguson was born in Virginia in 1780.  He married Nancy Ann Smith in 1809, and the couple had twelve children, according to my information.

The family moved to Missouri around 1823.  One of their children was David Ferguson (1833-1901), born in Gasconade County, Missouri.  He married Margarett Anne Pummell (1835-1908) in 1852 (see their marriage certificate). The couple had ten children, one of whom was my great-grandfather, Joseph William Ferguson, born in 1856 in Chamois, Missouri.  In 1860 the David Ferguson family moved to Dallas County in Central Texas, along with David's brother James Parson Ferguson and his family.  When the Civil War began, both David and James enlisted in the Confederate Army, serving with the 30th Texas Cavalry.  Around 1870, David and his family moved to Tarrant County, near present day Arlington.

Check out the very interesting narrative describing the James Parson Ferguson family copied from the book, "Proud Heritage - Pioneer Families of Dallas County Texas".

Joseph William Ferguson (1856-1942) married my great-grandmother Laura L. Murrell, a native of Harrison County, Texas, in 1888 or 1889.  Laura was the daughter of Edmund Murrell and Eveline Stovall. They had two sons while living in Texas, my grandfather Leonard William Ferguson being the second, born in 1892.  In the late 1890's, they moved to Shreveport, Louisiana, where they remained for the rest of their lives.  Three more children were born there.  Joseph was a Fireman for Kansas City Southern Railroad and retired after 40 years with the company.  Two of his sons, one being my grandfather Leonard, had lifelong careers with K.C.S.  Many Ferguson relatives and family friends were also railroaders.  Laura lived to the age of 98 years old.  See the Ferguson Family Pictures.

Leonard William Ferguson (1892-1964) married Kathleen Anna Augusta Jones (1899-1991) in 1916.  Kathleen was born in Indiana, but moved to Shreveport as a child, around 1905.  They had four children, making their home in Shreveport where Leonard worked for K.C.S. Railroad as a clerk and later Yardmaster.  One of Leonard and Kathleen's two daughters was Ruth Evelyn Ferguson, my mother, born in 1919.  She lived in Shreveport her entire life, with the exception of one short period in the early 40's.
