Notes for W. Miniard Harris

Found in the 1850 census, GA, Murray Co., P. 272, img. 252:

Minyard Harris 20 NC Farmer
Elizabeth A. Harris 20 GA

From Marie Harris Key's book: "Miniard and Elizabeth Harris left Dalton, Georgia October 4, 1859 by wagon train for Texas. Reaching Texas, W. Miniard Harris became ill, died in Wood Co., was buried in Cass Co., Texas. (Note: This is questionable; see 1860 Census below.) His widow went to Arkansas near Ozan, Hempstead Co., to live near relatives. All of the families made the trip at the same time from Georgia. Some of them settled in Wood Co., TX and some in Hempstead Co., Ark." (Note: Another record gives Miniard's death date as 4 Aug. 1860, which is probably correct.)

Found in the 1860 Census for Hempstead Co., Arkansas, Mine Creek Township, p. 887, img. 203:

Mincard Harris 30 M N.C. Farmer
Elizabeth Harris 30 F Ga.
Mary Francis Harris 9 F Ga.
John C. Harris 3 M Ga.
Andrew J. Harris 1 M Ga.

This is undoubtedly "Miniard" Harris, since the wife and children's names and ages match, which makes me doubt the story of him dying in Wood Co., Texas while on the way to Arkansas, given in the Marie Key book, above. It's possible he could have died while on a trip to Texas after the census was taken in June, 1860.
