| Isaac Edward Orchard was a notable chess player, and competed in tournaments in the South Carolina region. There are several mentions of him as a player and as a writer on the subject in several chess-related publications, such as this article from "Spartanchess", a publication of the Spartanburg (SC) Chess Club: "Club History Organized chess in Spartanburg goes back to at least 1881 when both a major and a minor tournament were held at the Merchants' Inn. Records of these events are sketchy, but evidently the proceedings opened with the mayor participating in a consultation game and the major tournament continuing for a week. Chess historian, Robert John McCrary, found an announcement of this tournament in the "Philadelphia Times" and very possibly a game from this event won by Isaac E. Orchard, a Columbia native." ..................................................................................... The following is an obituary which was part of an early genealogy research done by an unknown relative. The source of the obituary is unknown. "Isaac E Orchard, distinguished owner and editor of musical magazine "TONE", and editorial writer for the Atlanta Constitution. Mrs. H. Z. Orchard, His mother, lived at 232 West Peachtree Street in Atlanta. He died in New York, at his home suddenly at the age of 48. He was survived by his mother, two sisters and three brothers. Genie Orchard Stovall, Mrs. Thomas C. Lipscomb, W.C. Orchard, J.J Orchard in Dallas, Texas, and F. B. Orchard in Washington, D.C.
