| Notes for Henry M. Orchard |
| During the Civil War, Henry M. Orchard served in Company A, 15th South Carolina Infantry Regiment. This regiment has an illustrious record and was engaged in most of the major battles of the eastern war, but it is unknown what role Henry Orchard played. His Confederate service record has few details. It states that he enlisted as a private on September 5, 1861 at Lightwood Knot Springs, near Columbia, SC. Company A was known as the Columbia Rifles, and was commanded by Thomas W. Radcliffe. He is listed as present with this unit as a private through August, 1864, when the record ends. On August 8, 1864, he was sick in Jackson Hospital in Richmond, VA, and on August 12th was furloughed for 30 days to Columbia, SC. He was apparently sent home to recuperate from his illness. It is assumed that he returned to his unit, but it is unknown how he spent the remainder of the war. The 15th S. C. Infantry Regiment was formed near Columbia, SC in Sept., 1861 with soldiers from Richland, Union, Lexington, Kershaw, Fairfield, and Williamsburg counties. The regiment participated in the campaigns of the Army of Northern Virginia from Second Manassas to Gettysburg, then fought with Longstreet at Chickamauga and Knoxville. It returned to Virginia, saw action at The Wilderness, Spotsylvania, and Cold Harbor, and later was involved in Early's Shenandoah Valley operations and the North Carolina Campaign. ............................................................................................... A Henry Orchard, age 27, was found in the 1870 Census, SC, Lexington Co., p. 79, img. 100, living with three other men (Fred, Thomas, and Jonathan Kaigler), no women, occupations listed as farmers. Lexington Co. is adjacent to Richland Co., his former home. This is probably the same Henry Orchard, and indicates that he did survive the Civil War. Jonathan Kaigler served in the same Confederate company as Henry Orchard. ................................................................................................
