| Notes for Francis Belton Orchard |
| Listed as "Frank B. Orchard" on the 1850 and 1860 census as son of Wm. H. Orchard. ................................................................................................. Francis Belton Orchard was a Civil War veteran who served in the Confederate Army. It is unclear where he spent most of the war, or whether or not he saw any fighting. His service record states at one point that he was detached to the regimental band, and for several months he was sick in a hospital. The following is from information extracted from his Confederate service record: He enlisted in Company G, 6th South Carolina Cavalry Regiment on June 28, 1862 in Columbia, SC, with a rank of 3rd Corporal. His company commander was Captain John R. Miot. The muster roll for Jan. and Feb., 1863 shows him present with a rank of 2nd Corporal. For May and June, 1863, the roll indicates he is a musician and "Detached in Regimental Band sick in Ladies Hospital Columbia". The roll for July and Aug., 1863 shows him as a Private and still "Sick in Ladies Hospital Columbia". The next roll in the record is for Nov. and Dec., 1863, and shows him present, so he obviously recovered from his illness by that time. A letter authorizing furlough for F.B. Orchard covering the period of 18 Jan. to 8 Feb. 1864 to Columbia is in the service record, written in the hand of his company commander, Lt. E.R. Clinkscales. It contains this description of Belton: "aged 20 years, five feet 8 inches high, light complexion, light hair, gray eyes, by profession a merchant from Edgefield Dist SC...". The rolls continue to show him present, rank Private, the last existing record being for the period of Sept. and Oct., 1864. It is unknown whether he served until the end of the war. The 6th South Carolina Cavalry was know as Aiken's Partisan Rangers, and 1st Partisan Rangers, and was formed from a nucleus of men from the 16th Battalion South Carolina Partisan Rangers, which included F.B. Orchard. The record for this unit indicates that it participated in several major battles, including The Wilderness and Cold Harbor in Virginia. Whether or not Orchard was present at these battles is not known. ..................................................................................................
